About Domain Blacklist Check

Have you ever come through the words blacklist or blacklist or blackhole? These words bear the congruent meaning. While writing this short description I am using the word blacklist to symbolize all three. Blacklist is the list of domains and IP address that send spam messages. The blacklist can affect reputation. These sites in question send spam; host botnets and can also spread malware. An IP address may be blacklisted from a single site or may be blacklisted from multiple sites. Blacklisting affects the reputation of the company and can be harmful to a business. Email send from a blacklisted site is strictly prohibited. Sometimes many a company publish a list contains the names of the Blacklisted companies; IP address and their domain names. This can be led to loss of customers if you are owning a business and thus creating a negative impression.

If you ask me that why your IP address blacklisted is, then that could be for several reasons. An IP address may be blacklisted on a single list or in a multiple listed sites. If you are heading any business then try to assign a static business IP address. Secondly, suppose you are tried to communicate with another machine while your machine contains malware or virus or spam. This spam or viruses is notice by the admin of the other site and thus can take effort in blocking your IP address. Running a unconfigured mail, that allows in sending spam can also result in blacklisting of your IP address. Thirdly before picking any IP address make it sure that it was not blacklisted prior.

Many a times we see some spam mails coming on our emails and sometimes we put them in the category of blacklist so that they cannot irritate us again and again. Same is the concept with the websites. Sometimes the domains are blacklisted by the authoritative web hosts or the system administrators. The domains are added to the list of the category of blacklist and you get your sent mails reverted back to you or some other issues.

So, if you want to identify that whether your domain has been under some critical action or is being reported as spam, then there is a very powerful tool available for you. It is one and only the Blacklist Lookup tool.

Types of Blacklists

Blacklists can be classified into two categories, namely, the IP address based and the domain based;

IP address based: If there is a real-time change in the spam status of the IP address then such a list is easily available in the RBL (Real-time blacklist) and DNSBL (Domain Name Server Blacklist). Mailbox providers look up to this blacklist for checking open relays and spammers. The common DNSBL/RBLs include the following;

  • RNBL: Commonly referred to as Return Path Reputation Network Blacklist. It is a list of real time that consists of IP addresses in which the return path determines the blocking through mailbox providers generally based on the Return Path Provider Network.
  • SBL (Spamhaus Block List) refers to the IP address database from where Spamhaus does not accept email. If you get blacklisted through SBL, plan an action plan for rectifying the problem for which the blacklist has occurred.
  • XBL is commonly known as Exploits Bot List that contains open proxies and illegal 3rd party exploit that are used to send viruses and spam.
  • Commonly known as the Composite Blocking List is the DNS blacklist that is suspected of sending malware infection or virus infection or spam. The CBL has an easy self-automated removal system.
  • SpamCop: SCBL is commonly referred to as the SapmCop Blacklist. It allows recipients to report spammers. The SpamCob Blacklisting tool determines whether the report done by the users are correct or not. Here, in this case, the IP address gets automatically delisted after 24 hours of the stop of the spam report.
  • Psbl is commonly referred to as the Passive Spam Blocklist. This happens when IP address sends email to the spam trap. If the address is not from a known mail server, then the message is identified as spam.
  • Commonly known as Lashback's UBL, sends email through suppression files to the names harvested.
  • Involvement: This consists of three anti-spam blacklists:
    • ivmURI: This is mainly the spammers owned domains.
    • IvmSIP: This spam IP addresses are not yet listed by the Spamhaus.
    • IvmSIP/24: Here the patterns through which spam send are detected.

Domain Based: It consist of domain lists which appear in the email body. The common URI real time blacklists are:

  • These real time databases are usually found in spam messages. These website domains consist of spam domains and spammers.
  • URIBL: This consists of a domain list that is generally used in the spam email. Here the delisting occurs automatically.
  • SURBL: It consists of a list of website domains which appears in the unsolicited messages. The owner can remove with the help of an initial lookup.
